If you’re planning on a new lawn this autumn, prepare the area now to give it time to settle. This will give weeds time to germinate so you can totally clear the area before planting. Prepare for any fall grass seed planting by leveling low spots, removing weeds, and choosing your seed. (You may need to order in advance.)
Fall the best time to plant cool-season grass seed because the soil is still warm from months of summer sun. Warm soil combined with moderate day temperatures and cool evenings promotes quicker germination. In autumn months precipitation usually increases which lessens the need for irrigation for a newly planted lawn.
Even if you do not reseed, this is a good time to aerate and dethatch your lawn. The best time of year for dethatching is the same as for aerating: early spring or early fall for cool-season grasses, and late spring through early summer (after the second mowing) for warm-season grasses. While you are raking leaves this fall simply push the rake tines deeply down into the grass to dethatch your lawn. You’ll be helping your lawn to stay healthy.
